The ancient Goddess Cupra

An Ancient Goddess Left Her Mark in This Locality

The northernmost town of the Riviera delle Palme, famous for its Malacological Museum, a collection of shells from all over the world, boasting 700,000 specimens including the gigantic Tridacna gigas.
The territory was sacred to the ancient Etruscan-Picene Goddess “Cupra” and was an important Roman port center. Testimonies of this past are preserved in the Museum of the Territory in the village of Marano, which, separated from the more recent Cupra, has remained extraordinarily intact in its medieval structure.

When the Goddesses are generous and leave their fruits

The Sforza walls adorned with green palms and pines, the remains of the fortress, the solitary and steep streets, and the ancient palaces are moving. The ancient Roman city, which developed mainly in the first two centuries of the empire, stood on the nearby Civita hill, an area now organized into a large archaeological park, and on the adjacent San Basso hill, where powerful constructions are the remains of the ancient temple dedicated to the Goddess Cupra. About 500 meters south of the town, the hill rises where the medieval castle of S. Andrea stands, an ancient fortress with lookout and defense functions, whose remains plunge sheer into the sea. The panorama enjoyed from this point is simply breathtaking.
